JagsTexans response

The main reason the Jaguars kept going to the fade route near the goal line is they had so much success with it last week in practice. According to quarterback David Garrard, the same play where the Jags failed to complete a pass three times to Matt Jones and another time failed to complete it to Ernest Wilford worked all 12 times they tried it in practice. All for touchdowns with the ball near the goal line. So when something works that well in practice, you want to give it a shot in the game. But after going 0-for-4 on the play against the Texans, they may not go to the well so often in future games. On three of the four passes, Garrard failed to throw a catchable ball. Jones had a reasonable shot at one of the jump-ball throws, but couldn't bring it in.

Jag fan from '95 asked about why the Jags didn't kick a FG on 4th-and-10 from the 19: Kicker Josh Scobee injured his quad muscle when his foot hit the ground during pregame warmups. He was hobbling so bad even after extra points. They determined he'd try no field goals beyond 25 yards, which is why he kicked a 22-yarder and one extra point, but never was on the field for kickofffs.

James asked why the Jags don't have a backup kicker on the roster: Generally, teams only keep one kicker because there's only 53 on a roster and 7 get deactivated on game day. Depth is usually a much greater need in other areas that coaches don't want to use up a game-day roster spot on a kicker that isn't likely to play. It's rare when placekickers get hurt, but in this case, it cost the Jaguars a valuable three points. But given the way the defense played SUnday, it's questionable whether a healthy Scobee would have altered the outcome because the offense never got in position to score in the entire second half.

Frenette Files ground rules

To our online audience: Please be mindful that this is a question-and-answer session for fans after Jaguars' games, not a chat room where I'm blogging with you back and forth. I ask that bloggers refrain from using profane language out of respect for all people who view this site. Simply post whatever game-related or Jaguar-related question that you may have and I will answer as best I can within a reasonable period of time. There's no guarantee that I can answer every question posed to me because there are time constraints based on my post-game duties for the Florida Times-Union. Some answers will be plain factual responses and others will involve some opinion, depending on the type of question asked. Thanks for your participation and hope you enjoy the feedback. To ask a question for Gene Frenette, just leave it in the comment section of this post after the Jaguars game.
